Southbound-81
Watch the last hill of New York
Set on the horizon
All the trees that gave to the ground I was made on
Disappear in my rearview.
And I kiss it all goodbye
and I hold you all inside
as I set off toward my life.
I am not claiming I can fly.
But if I cut this rope and try
One day I could say that I
Dared to weather a life untethered
to the ground
to the ground.
The Main Street concrete
has soaked up all my stories.
As if pavement could wield a pen
it has written them on my mind.
You’re all ingrained in all the changes
I’ve sustained along the way;
in all the glory and the pain
that is now running through my veins.
I am not claiming I can fly.
But if I cut this rope and try
One day I could say that I
Dared to weather a life untethered
to the ground
to the ground.
Now I’m Southbound 81,
Left cheek to the sun.
I gave a rich goodbye to everyone.
Open Road
I wrote this all on capo 2 just ’cause I knew
it would intrigue you, yeah.
I sure hope it will do.
And I’ll bear this all out on my sleeve
in the hopes that maybe you won’t leave.
I’ve got it bad, you see.
I know you’ve got to find your soul,
Maybe somewhere on that open road.
Yeah, I’ve been there too.
But, before you do go,
Please do know
That I’m on fire,
I’m on fire for you.
I’ve got to try this once before,
Before you’re up and out my door,
Maybe kiss you once or more.
And I know you’ve got to find your soul,
Maybe somewhere on that open road.
Yeah, I’ve been there too.
But, before you do go,
Please do know
That I’m on fire,
I’m on fire for you.
I wish for you a great escape
And a piece of truth along the way
On every stop you make.
But, before you do go,
Please do know
That I’m on fire,
I’m on fire,
I’m on fire for you.
Don’t Forget Tonight
A few precious moments are left.
Steal this love from my lips
Before the clock chimes and we
Have to give it back again.
And curse all the space in between your heart
And the places I will be,
And these restless feet, though they have
brought about the best in me.
ooo….
ooo….
Why did we let all this time slip by
Knowing the truth of our hearts
On each other’s minds?
Don’t forget tonight.
Don’t forget tonight.
Those eyes are begging me to stay
Here in the love we finally made
In this sweet hallowed space.
I know the next place I will be.
If I can will myself to leave
I will call you when I get there safely.
Don’t forget tonight.
Don’t forget tonight.
In this life, we only get so many tries
To say that we felt this alive.
All we can do is take tonight
And hold it as a sacred light
To keep it in our hearts alive;
Hoping that we won’t forget tonight.
Don’t forget tonight.
Muse
Baby, I don’t need your hand
No, Honey, I don’t need a man.
But, you I’d never turn away.
I could take your tender kiss,
or I could let you run amiss.
I’d never stand to see you caged.
I go about my day,
I know that I can get along without you.
But, I sing a little tune and
I write a song about you.
If never anything more,
You were my muse.
I could lay inside your arms again
Or I could only be a friend.
I’ll take you any way you offer.
You could ask me for a dance
Say, “Let’s give this love a chance.”
Or we could go our separate ways.
I go about my day,
I know that I can get along without you.
But, I sing a little tune and
I write a song about you.
If never anything more,
You were my muse. (2x)
Humble Me
Humble Me. Take me down a few notches.
Make me believe I can do better than this.
Show me my face,
for what it really is.
Then take it away
and make me search the world for it.
Humble Me. Take me down a few notches.
Make me believe I can do better than this.
Show me my face,
for what it really is.
Then take it away
and make me search the world for it.
My little wrecking ball;
Build it up just to make it fall.
Never knew how to be whole anyway.
Would you know what to do with it if it ever came?
And if you got that high, and believed you could fly
Would you still look up?
I don’t know what to say,
We can always make it better for another day.
But today,
Would you humble me? Take me down a few notches?
I’m begging you please,
rain it down on me.
Show me my face,
for what it really is.
Then take it away
and make me search the world for it.
I’ll run, run, run as fast as I can
But you always catch up when my legs buckle in.
So go ahead, baby, you can take the win.
Push me down, wind me up.
Oh, it’s never enough.
Say when, we’ll play again.
Huh. oh oh…
Huh. oh oh…
oooo….(x2)
So, humble me. Take me down a few notches.
Make me believe I can do better than this.
Show me my face,
for what it really is.
Then take it away
and make me search the world for it.
The Expanse
Climb with me to the top of the high wire.
Instruct the men to remove the safety net
Ooooooooo
Ooooooooo
I’ve walked this rope a thousand times
But not with chance and not without my eyes.
It seems my feet fear to leave the solid ground
But if you take my hand,
And cross, with me, the expanse,
I promise I won’t even look down.
Mmm mmm
You’ve been waiting patiently
Waiting for me to open my eyes and see
That you’re just as scared as me
But if you take my hand,
And cross, with me, the expanse,
I promise I won’t even look down.
Oo, oo oo…
But if you take my hand,
And cross, with me, the expanse,
I promise I won’t even look down.
When Lost
In the wind, I look the same as I did
a year ago when I lost control.
But inside I’ve moved and changed and died
and I feel new; so new.
There are times when hoping
cannot guide you home
or even where you want to go.
And we all get lost sometimes.
And we all get lost sometimes.
It waits, it hides. (it waits, it hides….)
Waiting for a loose thread to unwind. (it waits, it hides….)
Then it moves, it grows;
and I don’t know who I am,
It leads me by the hand.
Then I face the dark;
One heart; groping for a
Silver thread to lead me from this hell.
And we all get lost sometimes.
And we all get lost sometimes.
And I see life in poetry
and metaphor and movements of a symphony.
So, I will write a song like this
to calm my heart in the hopes of
Understanding it.
Because the real kinds of love will make me home.
The real kinds of love will make me home.
Consequences
The troops are falling back
In the face the advance I’m left defenseless.
When all is said and done
My heart is pounding on the run my mind is senseless.
I wish I had known this before
I let this sink in…
The circumstance that stands between
What I want and what I should do.
Well darlin’ these are the consequences
Of trying to love with all your defenses.
What else is going to happen when you’re scared
and dancing on fences.
I’m begging you surrender
And let me fall in love again.
You feel it coming up
The fear is writhing in your gut,
And all you want to do
Is to stop the fears eluding you from your life.
Box up your heart, hand it to another.
then snatch it right back and run for cover.
These are the consequences
Of trying to love with all your defenses.
What else is going to happen when you’re scared
and dancing on fences.
I’m begging you surrender
And let me fall in love again.
These are the consequences
Of trying to love with all your defenses.
What else is going to happen when you’re scared
and dancing on fences.
I’m begging you surrender
And let me fall in love again.
Cat and Mouse
I run into my hiding place
but you just sit and wait
on the other side of the room.
You patiently groom yourself
though house lady gave you the broom.
Well, I ain’t tryin’ to play cat and mouse with you boy.
I don’t really care what you thought.
You can chase me all you want but I already told you I ain’t even tryin’ to get caught.
So, do us both a favor, get more fruits for your labor,
go chase a tail in some other house.
Not willin’ to be no fool,
I ain’t playin’ cat and mouse.
You can bait as many traps as you please.
I have never had a liking for these.
You’ve so many pretty mices
caught up in your devices
why can’t you just leave me be?
Well, I ain’t tryin’ to play cat and mouse with you boy.
I don’t really care what you thought.
You can chase me all you want
but I ain’t even tryin’ to get caught.
So, do us both a favor, get more fruits for your labor,
go chase a tail in some other house.
Not willin’ to be no fool,
I ain’t playin’ cat and mouse.
Not willin’ to be no fool,
I ain’t playin’ cat and mouse.
Seek and Pay
For the first time, we stood on the same ground.
On a long phone call, for a moment, were unbound.
Finally wanting more, finally saw the score unsettled.
And we talked of going forth to remind ourselves
What we live for.
But we never moved an inch.
We never moved an inch.
We never moved an inch.
Oh, there’s courage alone in the way we know
What we truly need.
But, do we fear too much to believe
We could ever really have more
Than we were told to seek.
And now the call is over so we go about our days.
Barely getting through with our sanity maintained.
Oh, the words we’ve spoken, I still find they resonate.
But, they never really freed us from our chains.
Oh, there’s courage alone in the way we know
What we truly need.
But, do we fear too much to believe
We could ever really have more
Than we were told to seek.
We seek, we pay.
We seek and we pay.
And now the call is over, so we go about our days.
But, do you ever sit and wonder why
We’re walking the same way
Instead of roads we spoke of,
Or why this is a price we chose
To pay?
We seek, we pay.
We seek, we pay.
We seek and we pay.
We seek…
Life is not Glass
New
I find myself again a child.
New spaces and season changes
Give way to new faces.
While leaves die I am new
New
I’ve been holding onto fears
Giving into tears
I don’t want to be here anymore.
It’s time to give it up,
Let it go and just love,
Win my own trust and let my heart run
New, new
It’s hard to still the feet of a wandering soul
I hope I open up my eyes more
A whole new place here in this same space.
The deep night; the city lights may not have changed
But I became new
New…..
Outtro (Crumble)
All my pride, it dies when I met you.
All of these walls crumble for you.
All my pride, it dies when I met you.
All of these walls crumble for you.
All my pride, it dies when I met you.
All of these walls crumble for you.
Time drags on, but not before too long,
I’ll belong to you.
Time drags on, but not before too long,
I’ll belong to you.
All my pride, it died when I met you.
